Review: Klockworks – Klockworks 04

Label: Klockworks
Catalog#: 04

Tracklist:

A1: Pulse

A2: Grope

B1: Grab Me

B2: Grasp

Rating: 2,5/5

As most of you probably know, Klockworks is the moniker and label from the Berghain resident Ben Klock. The label probably doesn’t have a release schedule based on the fact of the months (and years) between them. This makes me hope that every new release would be very well worked through and proper.

But since the first and second release I think that most of the tracks sounds like DJ tools that, quite frankly, don’t need to be released.

Starting with the A-side with the track ‘Pulse’, it brings up a little promise about a grooving record that with a crunched and mechanical-like atmosphere will keep both your head and knees nodding. For me, this track is the only one on the release which seems good enough for a vinyl.

The rest of the tracks seems quite insignificant. They are really close of being something special, especially with the small sounds here and there that craves your attention and the excellent use of effects on each channel.

The B2 side with ‘Grasp’ is the second best track on the release with it’s nice hint of Detroit influence and wobbling bassline and cut up hihat – unfortunately it doesn’t lift the release to a higher rating because of the tracks between it and ‘Pulse’ on the A1. If Klock would get rid of the tracks ‘Grope’ and ‘Grab Me’ this release would get a more solid energy and a distinct feeling to it.

If you are a fan of Klocks material, this release is worth a listen to and up for your judgement. If you haven’t liked his previous work you shouldn’t really bother.

Review: MLZ & Pacou – Remixes

Label: Cache Records
Catalog#: CACHE 011

Tracklist:

A: Pacou – Minus – MLZ Remix

B: MLZ – New Analog Century – Pacou Remix

Rating: 4/5

Recommended!

New installment in the excellent Cache label!

As usual with Cache the release feels very worked through and holds a high standard, which is quite hard to come by these days.

MLZ is behind the Modern Love label, which is a part of the store boomkat.com. Pacou is the man behind Cache Records. Together they have now remixed each other which is both interesting and a great result of two talents.

The MLZ remix on the A side has a very subtle but heavy feel to it, generated by haunting synthlines with reverbed claps and percussion, rattling hihats and a bubbling bassline. Perfect to close your eyes to and float away, the suble progressions in the track makes you forget about both time and space.

Pacou of Tresor fame has made his remix into a dub number with and extremely cut kick drenched in slow paced ping-pong-ish synth chord stabs. If you compare both sides of this 12″, the wall of sound is almost the same, which makes me guess they have influenced each other under the producing stage.

Not much can be said other than that the tracks feel absent of time and space, they create their own worlds in which they welcome you. This release is not so easy to swallow if you don’t like dubbed out soundscapes, but if you do, this one’s for you.

News: 3rd November 2008

I’ve now added the flash player for previewing tracks as well as a link to where you can buy the reviewed releases.

The decision to add full downloadable mp3s hasn’t been completely decided yet, so I’ll ask you if you think I should provide downloadable links to the mp3s. The mp3s will then be in either VBR, 128 or 192kbps quailty in respect for the artists and labels.

Review: Pangaea – You & I

Label: Hessle Audio
Catalog#: HES006

Tracklist:

A: You & I

B: Router

Rating: 5/5

Recommended!

Every new Hessle Audio release is very interesting because the label always maintains a high standard. Every release seems thoughtful and powerful.

‘You & I’ has a deep and haunting vocal over a dubstepXtechno beat. The sound is very direct and extremely danceable, which together with the vocal reminds me of Burial’s ‘Untrue’ album (essential purchase by the way). The bassline keeps you hypnotized together with the excellent percussion that is so tight that your feet will never forgive you.

‘Router’ has a faster wall of sound that focuses around a synth stab which gives the track a very tough image. Small changes in the sounds will keep you sharp while the track progresses. The closest reference must be Peverelist and Martyn making a track together.

Essential release!

Review: Jörg Henze – 3000

Label: DMOM
Catalog#: 3000

Tracklist:

A: Devon
B: Karbon

Rating:3,5/5

Henze’s release for DMOM is quite similar to Alex Bau’s own sound. The difference is the use of samples and other more unusal sounds that brings forward a more mystic atmosphere.

The A-side with ‘Devon’ is the more cut up and uses samples more frequently, which would suit well to fans of Akufen and maybe even Kalk Pets. The beat is pretty driving but the track doesn’t really go anywhere, which makes it more usable as a tool in a DJ set (nothing wrong with that at all!).

‘Karbon’ is the reason you should get this one. Hard evolving horizontal music which uses crushed samples and dusty percussion. The destroyed sounds makes this track perfect for people who are fans of the more darker techno filled with lack of emotion.

Overall this is an okay release, but you should check out Karbon first and then decide!
